I believe that design can't exist without purpose. Whether that purpose is to annoy or delight should be clear. Don't be afraid of designing something that's ugly, so long as that is your intent.
Trends are sometimes fun, but can distract you from the proper solution to your problem. Remember when everyone was drinking margaritas? Turns out that all you needed was a beer. I guess design is like that.
